Jesse Chun

시:sea (2565) is a moving image sculpture composed of a black-and-white single-channel projection, mirrors, and rocks. As a part of Chun’s ongoing 시:sea series (2022–), the moving image features the artist’s diaristic footages and intimate notes on language, meaning, and time. 시, meaning “poetry” in Korean, can be mistranslated as “sea” in English when pronounced phonetically. Engaging with mistranslation as an active poetic form, Chun’s silent moving image sculpture refuses clarity and linear narrative; instead, it offers an abstract, intertextual portal and a spatial poem. The work’s subtitle (2565) references the Buddhist year that the work was made. Deviating from the Anglophonic notions of semiotics and time, 시:sea (2565) considers transcendental possibilities of meaning.
